Dear Mr Charlton:
I am nearly 83 years old but not quite finished with writing, albeit a blog for the Goan community around the world heading toward two million hits and growing.
I was hired by the Sydney Morning Herald, recruited from the UK. From that moment on, life has been pretty seamless ... we had already learnt of the Eurpean way of life having lived in UK, Kenya etc.
On arrival in Australia, we quickly took up Australian citizenship. We were handed a great booklet called "How to be a good Australian". The booklet filled the gaps that we were lacking about being an Australian.
All the murder, death and mayhem happening in Australia from time to time made me think: Isn't everyone living here an Australian? So why the murder, death and destruction? Or is all the death and destruction due to the criminal element in Australia ... we must be a nation of criminals, albeit Australian criminals. So if the Jews and Arabs in Australia are Australians, why the murder and mayhem?
I am also concerned about the Indian migration (you might not like this). Not All Asian migrants need lessons in how to be agood Australians, but quite a lot do. Down the road from you, Pendle Hill was a real haven when we first moved in many years ago. The population was mainly white Australian with a sprinkling of new migrants. We had a memorable time especially at Christmas, Easter, New Year's, Australia Day. Every one helped everyone in our street. You did not need to find a mechanic, a carpenter, a lawn mower specialist, no job was too big for any of the white neighbours and they were always willing hands. Now that they are gone, there are still a few left, mostly senior citizens. The newcomers keep to themselves ... hence hey have no idea of the etiquette of living in an Australian suburb. Mind you there are some very good people among them.
Pendle Hill is now little Sri Lanka, ettiquete, good manners, consideration, respect for the elderly has gone down the drain. Respect for rules and etiquette of parking is something from history's past. Almost all of the Australian way of life has gone out of the window.ALL the playfields have been asianised but I still wonder how come so many people fill the Leagues club day and night.
This is for starters, I know you are a very busy man, with little or no time to spare an old man, but I live in hope.
