A brief history of Kenya cinemas

 H. JANMOHAMED   I am from Mombasa, Kenya and spent my teenage years working and helping my family manage the Regal Theatre in Mombasa....The magic and thrill of cinemas and movies never leaves you!! This blog provides historical information, trivia and photos on the cinemas, and the cinema industry in East Africa. Also visit the Regal Theatre Mombasa page on Facebook.

REGAL THEATRE, MOMBASA

I discovered this photo of Regal Theatre, Mombasa in our family album. I think it's the only one in existence that shows the facade, ie. the front of the building overlooking Salim Road.

It appears to have been taken in the late 1940s / early 1950s.

In those days parking was allowed in front of the building on Salim Road!

It's amazing to see the street vendor selling nuts in front of the entrance. I used to buy peanuts here in the 1970s and mix it with my popcorn before the movie! We used to stand her to see Kenyatta and Moi's motorcade when they were in Mombasa.

The 'L' in REGAL sign was never fixed!!

This is the new entrance. The old entrance (around 1935) was on Meru Road. It would take you directly to the stalls!

You can see a portion of the leaves of the trees (top of photo) that was at the center of Salim Road.

A portion of Pandya House can be seen on the left.
