First Toronto GOA women's team in 1973

Here is the photo of the 1st GOA women's team in 1973 - thanks to Shirley Fernandes (Edwin Fernandes' wife- Dar). The Ugandan and Kenyan national players combined to form a strong team that beat the Canadian and American champions!  Many of us played for Ontario, and we were then recruited for the Canadian Trials, however, we had to relocate to Vancouver.  As new immigrants, this was an impossibility.

The Ugandan and Kenyan players combined to form a strong team that beat the reigning Canadian and American teams.

We played all over North America and Bermuda, it was a great team! Zulema was the captain, and Astrid was the vice captain. We had a secret weapon- we talked Swahili, which completely frustrated the opposing teams!

STANDING: Sharon de Souza (Zulema's daughter), Mitelia Paul, Gloria Fernandes, Ina Rodrigues, Ramona Fernandes (Joan Rosario's sister), Shirley Fernandes, Astrid Fernandes, Harjitt Davda.

KNEELING: Melba de Souza (nee Almeida), Ella Gomes, Shirley's mom, Yasmin Fernandes (my sister), Zulema de Souza.

Three sisters on the team: Astrid Fernandes, Yasmin Fernandes and Mitelia Fernandes

Please don’t think I am or have been ignoring you – quite the opposite hard to spill it out with diminishing gufu (strength). Wish they could establish what is causing the chronic bleeding in my brain region. I want to sing again and write so much however gufu na shindwa mimi (lack strength is hampering me. Please thank everyone for their prayers and for enriching my life. I was the dunce in the family: My brothers Rev Joseph SJ and the late Wilfrid are my heroes. I owe them so much, also my darling Elsie and each of my loving children, including Conrad who suffered so much during his short life. Our faith kept us going during those painful days in Marsab...
