Names...

In the early days of GOA Toronto, the Uganda and Kenya national team players joined forces in 1973. We were unbeatable in the Canadian and USA tournaments. Our instinctive play, superior stick work, strong defence, and goal-scoring were unmatched. Our opponents were constantly frustrated with our Swahili communication while on the field.

What success we had from 1973 to the late 1980s. Both men's and women's teams were the catalysts in the formation of the Toronto GOA in 1971. Much of this happened much before 1971, starting in 1968 when Adrienne Anne De Souza from Uganda and Mitelia Paul nee Fernandes from Kenya started playing hockey in Toronto with local teams.

Gradually, other Ugandan and Kenyan players migrated to Canada and voila! The first supreme GOA Toronto team was born.

Welcome field hockey players on the Bermuda Tour—both men and women toured Bermuda as the first GOA teams/touring teams. We were champions in North America and the Caribbean!

Morning my dear friends. Want to write to each one of you but I am exhausted! Thanks for everything. You have done much for me. Being discharged today after three long weeks. Wish they could establish what is causing the chronic bleeding in my brain region. I want to sing again and write so much however gufu na shindwa mimi (lack strength is hampering me. Please thank everyone for their prayers and for enriching my life. I was the dunce in the family: My brothers Rev Joseph SJ and the late Wilfrid are my heroes. His young daughter watched helplessly in the back seat of the family car. Pinto, a Member of Parliament at the time, was Kenya’s first political martyr. One man was wrongly accused of his death, served several years in prison and was later released and compensated. Since then no one has been charged with the murder. Now the long-awaited book on Pio Gama Pinto is finally here, launched in Nairobi on 16 October 2018....
